Founded in 1893, the DAM moved to its present facility in the early 1970's. the gray, ceramic tiled building with its distinctive castle like facade was designed by Gio Ponti in 1972. The largest art museum between Kansas City and the West coast, the DAM houses the largest single collection of Native American art, and an extensive collection of art from the American West. Opening in 2006, the Frederic C. Hamilton annex will house long stored exhibits in a spectacular building designed by world renowned architect Daniel Libeskind.
