The Colorado Capitol Building
Colorado's State Capitol building is located at Colfax Avenue and Lincoln Street, immediately southeast from downtown. The Capitol is built on a 10 acre site donated to the state by Henry C. Brown in January, 1868. Mr. Brown donated the land in hopes that the capitol site would increase the value of adjacent property he owned on what is now Capitol Hill. However, construction did not start of the building until July, 1886, after a series of events that included an attempt by Mr. Brown to reclaim the property and the statewide election to determine Denver as the state capital. The actual construction was plagued by many difficulties, including the dismissal of the E.E. Myers, the original architect. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1890, and the building was first occupied in November of 1894. The building was finally considered complete in 1908 when the gold was applied to the dome, 40 years after Henry Brown first donated the site.
